SOLSTICE WITH SANTA

For all ages

Celebrate the magic of winter and the beauty of the universe!  We'll take a lantern hike through Huntington Reservation, create a craft to decorate your home, make a special treat for wildlife in your backyard, encounter live animals and visit Schuele Planetarium to learn about the solstice.  Enjoy some hot cocoa near the cozy, crackling fire and be sure to bring your cameras - Santa will make an appearance!  Please dress for the weather.  Dinner is provided.

PL FAM Astronomy

FAMILY ASTRONOMY NIGHT

For all ages

Spend the autumnal equinox under the stars in Schuele Planetarium.  We will explore the constellations of fall, define an equinox and explain why we celebrate it!  A lantern hike through Huntington Reservation and indoor activity will complete the evening.  Weaher permitting, we'll catch a glimpse of the night sky using the Center's telescopes.

TELESCOPE NIGHT

For adults and children ages 6 and up

Join resident telescope expert and NASA Solar System Ambassador Bill Reed for evenings under the stars.  We will begin in the planetarium for an update on the night sky then head out to see the view using an 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.

Saturdays: 

September 21 at 8:30 p.m., October 19 and November 23 at 7:30 p.m.

FT HS Science Series

HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE SERIES

For ages 4 - 10

Explore Huntington Reservation, get up-close and personal with the Center's resident animals and participate in a new and engaging nature, STEM or space-themed science lesson each month! Groups are divided into Sprouts or Scientists, so we can dig deeper into the science concepts in an age-appropriate way!  Some programs may include an outdoor activity or hike, depending on season and weather.  Please dress appropriately.

Sprouts

Ages 4-6: 1 hour parent and child program from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

Scientists

Ages 7-10: 1.5 hour drop off program (optional) from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.

Register for one or all dates:

Wednesdays: September 11, October 9, November 13 and December 11

Fee: $10/child.  (One adult can accompany each registered child at no cost)

Parents are invited but not required to stay for Scientists programs (for children ages 7-10).  If a parent has children in both groups, we ask that the parent remain with the Sprouts group (for children ages 4-6).

School Age Explorers Club

EXPLORERS CLUB

For children in grades K-2

Students get their dose of science and nature in this monthly club!  Explore Huntington Reservation, learn from wildlife rehabilitation experts and tour the universe with our resident astronomers.  Use hands-on scientific equipment such as binoculars and STEM engineering tools.  Make your own exploration tool kit using a backpack filled with field guides, compasses and more to continue your investigations at home.  New activities each year!

WDL Keeper For Day

KEEPER FOR A DAY

For ages 13 and up

This program gives those wild about wildlife the chance to see (and touch!) all that's involved in caring for our resident animals and rehabilitation patients.  Participants will go behind the scenes alongside our Wildlife Specialists as they care for, assess and treat the animals.  Learn about animal husbandry, diet, wildlife medicine and more.  This is a great hands-on career shadowing experience.  Limited to 2 students per session.

This hallmark program in our beautiful Porter Creek classroom introduces children to the wonders of science and nature!  Through live animal encounters, outdoor hikes, stories, crafts, games and planetarium shows, children discover something new each week.  Children must be fully bathroom independent.

Earthlings STEAM Curriculum!

For children ages 4 - 6

This 3-hour adventure is full of hands-on fun in our Log Cabin classroom, planetarium and the great outdoors! Whether preparing for Kindergarten or already attending, your little earthling will love this program where we investigate the wonders of Earth and the sky above.  Children will explore science, technology, engineering, the arts, math and nature!  New curriculum offered each year.  A nut-free snack will be provided.

School Age Forest Guardians

FOREST GUARDIANS NEW!

For children in grades 3-5

Students will take their love of exploring to the next level by studying and preserving our local forest!  Forest Guardians will work as a research team, investigating Huntington Reservation to identify potential threats to its ecosystem.  Scientific studies will be conducted including macroinvertebrate sampling, water quality assessment, forest mapping, species identification and seasonal observations in the forest.  As a part of our research, Forest Guardians will develop a "Forest Protection Plan" to help preserve an area within Huntington Reservation.  This program is perfect for graduates of Explorers Club or any child that loves and wants to protect our natural world!

Calling all local sky enthusiasts!  Join us for Astronomy Club and explore the world of astronomy in a fun, social environment.  Planetarium Specialist and NASA Solar System Ambassador Bill Reed will share what's new in space, the latest gadgets, "astro-tainment" and mind-blowing facts.  Enjoy movie nights in Schuele Planetarium, workshops, stargazing with telescopes and more.  Astronomy Club is an exclusive free benefit to members of Lake Erie Nature & Science Center.
